Dear AHSAA Principals and Athletic Directors

You have received an email from the AHSAA regarding the 2022 AHSAA Proposals with instructions as to how to access and vote on these proposals through DragonFly. One of these proposals will be in reference to sanctioning Alabama Girls Wrestling.

Alabama High School girls wrestling participation has increased dramatically in the past three years. From 43 girls in 2019-2020, to 233 girls from 69 different high schools for the current 2021-2022 season. The unofficial Alabama Girls State Championship was held at Thompson High School on Saturday, January 22. There were 141 student athletes represented from 41 different schools. Of the 41 teams, 17 teams brought one wrestler!

Currently, 35 states have sanctioned high school girls wrestling including our southern neighboring states of Georgia, Tennessee and Florida. Our AHSAA high school coaches have worked very hard for the past three years to recruit and welcome girls to their teams. With over 75 colleges now offering women's wrestling (including D1 opportunities!), it is time for Alabama to prepare our female wrestlers for a college career in wrestling right alongside the boys.

By voting "YES" on the AHSAA proposal to sanction Alabama Girls Wrestling, you will allow these girls to have an official AHSAA State Wrestling Tournament and level the playing field for these female student athletes.
